Britain is not a part of the Schengen area which encourages them to think that they can march to a slightly different drumbeat on issues like mass migration.
Whether this position is sustainable in an age of increasing globalisation remains to be seen. I suspect it is not. In any case, migration issues will certainly play a key role in the forthcoming referendum on continued EU membership.
…
The debate over the scale of Britain’s response is likely to continue. The outcome is far from certain.
One thing is sure, however. Over the next 10 years, on a global level, we will see a ‘right to mobility’ enshrined as a core human rights issue, particularly as increasing numbers of people flee wars, natural disasters and poverty.
comments Mal Fletcher on the current refugee crisis. > Refugee Crisis Calls For Pragmatism And Compassion
Johnny Thalassites, student of Law at the University of Bristol and writer for the European Student Think Tank writes:
The public … now views David Cameron’s rejection of further refugees entering Europe in a new and callous light. Suffering and significant displacement of innocent people is certainly happening in Syria and other places, but there must be balance. This piece does not dispute the need for action and help, but it seeks to lend proportion to the arguments and to challenge conventional wisdom, with regards to how the UK can help both most effectively and no less important, most sensibly. {Refugee crisis: why pragmatism and empathy both must be summoned in the UK}
There may be many Ukip members and other nationalists who would keep resisting any more people entering their country to live there. The Archbishop of Canterbury is not afraid to promise to offer sanctuary for Syrian refugees at Lambeth Palace. Anglican leader Justin Welby will welcome people fleeing the war-ravaged country in a four-bedroom cottage at the palace, his official London residence.
A spokeswoman said the archbishop had been considering the move for “a while”. A cottage in the palace grounds is currently being redecorated and could provide room for a “family or two”. The rent for the refugees will be paid for by charitable funds under the archbishop’s personal control, the Sunday Times said.
Welby has been critical of Prime Minister David Cameron‘s recent offer to take in an extra 20,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years, calling it a “very slim response”.
The archbishop lives with his family on the top floor of the palace and this month opened up the rest of the building to a new community of young Christians from around the world.
Lambeth Palace, which dates back to the 15th century, lies on the south bank of the River Thames opposite the Houses of Parliament.
